Widening Horizons
The Widening Horizons project kicked off with its launch event on January 15th held at Plymouth Music Zone. One hundred Year 5 students form six local primary schools attended. The schools involved were Cathedral, High Street, Pilgrim, St Andrew’s, St George’s and St Peter's.
The day involved ice breaker activities, percussion playing and singing. During the afternoon the students rehearsed their song before recording it. A smaller number of students will return to the Music Zone at a later date to fine tune the recording before transferring it on to CD. Every participant will then be given a copy back in school.
The focus of the day was to have fun and help break down any barriers students may have to learning as well as to ‘launch’ a series of activities that will take place over the next two terms that will promote new experiences, builds confidence and self esteem and introduce all to new role models drawn from across the city of Plymouth and beyond.
Future activities will include visits to the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth Museum, Theatre Royal, Plymouth Argyle, Plymouth University and the Eden Project. These visits will allow students to meet employees and find out more about their day to day jobs and their career paths to date with the intention of promoting a broad careers knowledge which the student can use in an informed way at some time in the future; taking them beyond what they might within their home environment or in their local neighbourhood.
