Millfields Inspired is a community-focused charity based in Stonehouse, Plymouth. We work with local primary schools to raise aspirations, broaden horizons, and create opportunities for children to discover their potential. Our flagship programme, Widening Horizons, introduces children to the world of work through hands-on experiences and visits to local businesses. From inspiring trips to creative learning sessions, everything we do is designed to spark curiosity and build confidence for a brighter future.

Meet the Team

Chief Executive
Hello, I’m Louise Bisson, Chief Executive at Millfields Trust. With over 35 years of experience in finance, I’ve built my career on strong financial planning, budgeting, and strategic leadership skills that have taken me from crunching numbers to helping shape the future of a community focused organisation.
I joined Millfields Trust in 2018 as Finance Manager, where I looked after everything from daily operations to complex compliance and reporting. Since then, I’ve stepped into a leadership role where I not only support our brilliant team and tenants but also work closely with partners and the community to drive lasting impact.
One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been overseeing the finances for Millfields Inspired, our charitable arm that runs inspiring programmes for local young people. Knowing that my work helps open doors for the next generation is something I’m especially proud of.
Beyond the office, I’m a big believer in enjoying life to the full. You’ll often find me exploring Plymouth’s waterfront, soaking up the sun whenever I can, or heading off for a weekend with family especially to spend time with my granddaughter. I love a good shopping trip, and I never say no to catching up with friends over food, drinks, and a few laughs.

Operations Manager
I’m the Operations Manager here at Millfields Trust, and I’ve been part of the team since June 2023 – it’s been an incredible journey so far! No two days are ever the same, and I genuinely believe that every day is a school day.
Before joining the Trust, I worked in education in various admin roles, and I’ve been based in Stonehouse since 2015. I absolutely love the area – the people, the families, the buildings, and the rich history make it a place I’m proud to work in and support.
I’m passionate about creating welcoming, inclusive spaces where people feel at home. I don’t treat anyone differently from how I’d want to be treated myself with kindness, respect, and a good sense of humour.
I’m also completely dog mad. I love it when tenants bring their dogs in it’s the perfect excuse for a cuddle and a catch up.
In my spare time, you’ll usually find me out walking on Dartmoor, pottering in my garden (which is a little haven for birds and wildlife), or enjoying al fresco dinners, our BBQ was the best purchase we made last year! I also love a bottomless brunch with my girlfriends and never miss a proper Sunday roast from October through to April. After that, it’s back to BBQ season!

Marketing and Digital Engagement
Manager
As Marketing and Digital Engagement Manager at Millfields Trust, I lead all marketing activity across both Millfields Trust and Millfields Inspired. From managing our social media channels and websites to creating daily content and designing marketing materials, I ensure our communications reflect the vibrant community we work in.
You’ll often find me representing us at marketing and community events or getting hands-on with local initiatives raising awareness of our work and championing our amazing tenants or around one of our buildings with camera in hand.
With over four years of experience in marketing including three years leading campaigns for a creative studio I bring a strong creative background to the role. I hold a degree in Art History and a degree in Fashion Design, along with a qualification in Business Marketing.
What I love most about working at Millfields Trust is giving back to the community and collaborating with the inspiring businesses we support. No two days are the same, and I thrive on the variety, challenges, and learning opportunities that come with the role.
Outside of work, I freelance in design, sewing, and technical drawings. I’m always creating and when I’m not at my desk or designing, you’ll likely find me on the beach or in the sea, swimming or paddleboarding.

Trainee Finance Assistant
Hello! I’m a recently graduated geology student from the University of Plymouth and have even more recently began my working at the Millfields Trust as an Apprentice Business Administrator. I’m excited to start my career and develop my administrative and communication skills. Outside of work, I enjoy staying active by hiking and swimming, and I also enjoy playing video games and reading and writing in my spare time.

Maintenance Lead
I’ve been part of the Millfields Trust team for over five years, looking after the upkeep and smooth running of our buildings and facilities. From routine checks to emergency repairs, I make sure everything is in top working order. I also take pride in ensuring both the interior and exterior of our buildings are clean, safe, and presentable for everyone who visits or works here.
Before moving into maintenance, I spent many years in the catering industry, gaining valuable experience in managing busy environments and working with people, skills I still use every day.
Outside of work, I’m a keen motorbike enthusiast and currently restoring an old camper van. I’ve also recently purchased a property that is a renovation project, which keeps me busy in my spare time!

Maintenance

My name is Luke, and I’m currently a Property Maintenance Apprentice with Millfields Trust, where I’ve been working for the past year. I take pride in the hands-on nature of my role and enjoy the variety each day brings from repairs and refurbishments to general upkeep of the properties. My background as a mechanic has given me a strong foundation in practical skills and problem-solving, which I now apply in a broader context within the property maintenance field.
Outside of work, I like to make the most of my free time by exploring the moors, enjoying the peace and challenge of long walks in nature. I also have a passion for music and spend time playing the guitar, which offers a creative balance to my work. I'm always looking to learn new skills and continue growing both personally and professionally in the maintenance trade.

Finance Manager
Hi, I’m Cathy Usher, Finance Manager at Millfields Trust. I’ve worked in finance for over 30 years and have been fortunate to gain experience across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, construction, legal services, the public sector and charity.
Earlier in my career, I spent many years as Managing Director of Olympus Algram, which gave me valuable experience working at a strategic level across different countries, including Japan, America and Europe. I also spent two years as Chair of The Plymouth Manufacturing Group, where I enjoyed supporting local businesses and helping to build positive links within the local manufacturing community.
After holding senior responsibilities for many years, I’m now really looking forward to giving something back and working closely with the fantastic team at Millfields Trust. I enjoy working with people and aim to bring a calm, practical and supportive approach to everything I do. I have only been with the Trust for a short amount of time, but everyone has made me feel so welcome that it already feels as though I have always been here.
Outside of work, my mantra is, “Life is too short, so do what you love!” I have a real zest for life and a love of the countryside and animals, with horses being my biggest passion. I’m lucky to have my own horse, Jake, a 17 hand American Paint cross, and I spend much of my spare time riding him across the moor or taking part in lower level eventing.
My next little challenge it to pass my big bike test and get another motorbike. I used to ride a 125cc and would love to move on to a larger bike one day! Although my family are not quite as enthusiastic about the idea as I am!

Cleaner
Hi, I’m Joyce, and I take great pride in keeping our buildings clean, welcoming, and looking their best. You’ll usually spot me around the sites with a big smile on my face and I never miss a good photo opportunity! I love chatting with everyone and hearing what’s going on, and I’m always happy to brighten someone’s day. Outside of work, I enjoy spending weekends with my family and sharing all the fun things we get up to together.

Cleaner
Hi, I’m Wendy, and I take pride in keeping our buildings clean, welcoming, and running smoothly. I’m always happy to help and guide our tenants and visitors whenever they need a hand, and I love bringing a bit of laughter into everyone’s day. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, making memories with my grandchildren, and escaping to sunny places whenever I get the chance.

Meet the Directors

Director - Chair
I’ve always believed that the strongest communities are built by people who care about where they live and are willing to give something back. That’s why it’s such a privilege to serve as Chair of the Millfields Community Economic Development Trust CIC.
I have lived in Stonehouse and have the honour to represent the area as a Plymouth City Councillor since 2011. It is also a privilege to serve as a Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Co-operative and Community Development working with residents, businesses and partners to help make Plymouth a fairer, greener and more ambitious city. Throughout my career, my focus has always been on creating opportunities, tackling inequality and ensuring that every community has the chance to thrive.
The Millfields Trust is a remarkable organisation with a proud history of supporting local people, businesses, community groups and charities. Having been involved 15 years I'm passionate about protecting that legacy while making sure the Trust continues to evolve and meet the current and future needs of Stonehouse and its communities. Whether it's supporting a small grassroots project or investing in initiatives that have a lasting impact, I believe every building we own, project we run and grant that we make has the potential to change lives.
For me, the Trust is about more than buildings, projects and funding, it's about bringing people together, strengthening communities, and helping Stonehouse continue to flourish. I'm proud to work alongside my fellow Directors and our dedicated staff to ensure the Trust remains a positive force for good, creating opportunities and making a real difference for generations to come.
Whilst I am passionate about Stonehouse my roles with Millfields and the Council there is more to life. In my spare time it's great to be a tourist in Plymouth, I love The Box, enjoy the theatre, like the calm of the Elizabethan Garden, the peace of sitting on the Hoe and looking out to sea and spending time with friends sampling fantastic local food and drink. When not out and about I spend way too much on Lego which is fun way to unwind.

Director - Chair of Millfields Inspired
I was first introduced to the brilliant work of Millfields Trust in 2012 and joined the Board as a Director in 2023. My “day job” was owning and running a mechanical and electrical contracting business in Plymouth from 1989 until its sale in 2021.
I’ve lived and worked in Plymouth my entire life and have always considered it a city people move to, not from.
Being part of Millfields Trust has been a fantastic learning experience, and I’ve spent much of my time listening to and learning from expertise of others.
Alongside my role as Chair of the Millfields Inspired Board. I regularly volunteer with the charity, helping to inspire and encourage local children to explore their ambitions and future opportunities.
Outside of volunteering, I’m working on improving my tennis and, just like with Millfields Inspired, I often wish I’d started a bit younger!

Director
My family and I moved from Reading to Plymouth in 1997, and I was struck by the lack of diversity and the level of racism in the city at the time. Determined to help bring about change, I got involved with Racial Equality Council and worked on grassroots projects with families and individuals across Plymouth. One of our key strategies was developing the annual Respect Festival, an event that continues to bring people from all walks of life together to celebrate oneness and community.
I have spent more than 20 years working to tackle social isolation. Together with late husband, we proudly co-founder of Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support (DCRS), and my experience also includes working with British Red Cross Youth Service and the Devonport Regeneration Company, among others.
I am passionate about creating spaces where people feel welcome, valued, and connected. As a board member at Millfields Trust, I’m always on the lookout for new opportunities for Millfields and the community to work together, supporting local people and encouraging collaboration with local businesses.
As a person, I’m known for being strong, determined, and unafraid to get things done. I care deeply about fairness and bringing people together, and I’m committed to making a real difference in our city, because I believe in the power of kindness.
When I’m not working, you’ll most likely fine me meeting new people over a cuppa, listening to world music, or taking long walks in nature, enjoying the sound of birdsong

Director
I have lived in Plymouth since 2004 and am the Managing Director of Outersight (UK) Ltd, a Stonehouse based company specialising in remote wildlife monitoring.
Alongside this, I run Plymstages, providing mobile stages for live events, an industry I have been involved in for nearly 40 years.
As a tenant of Millfields Trust, I have seen first hand the positive impact the organisation has on local businesses, communities and individuals. I am also proud to serve as a Trustee of Millfields Inspired, supporting its work to create opportunities and improve lives across Plymouth.
My time as Chair of Governors at St George's Primary Academy gave me valuable insight into the challenges many young people face. It reinforced my belief that small interventions at an early stage can make a significant difference to a child's achievements, confidence and happiness later in life.
Being involved with both Millfields Trust and Millfields Inspired allows me to contribute to initiatives that strengthen our communities and help people reach their potential.

Director
I have lived in Stonehouse for 11 years and have been an active member of the community. I have done a lot of volunteering within Stonehouse in the past, both with a community radio station and at Christmas day events, to give isolated people a place to go. I have helped support local residents with a bereavement, linking them in with other organisations, encouraging them to seek support and befriending. With the social supermarket, I have helped to raise the profile and awareness of its presence, by talking to individuals while walking around the area and putting up posters in my block of flats.
In my previous role at UHPT, I helped to start the LGBT+ staff network. There I became chair of the network and helped support staff to raise issues and concerns as well as raising general awareness around LGBT+ issues across the trust. In my current role as a community builder for men, I have had the joy of working across the city raising awareness around men’s issues, supporting groups to reach more men and helping people find the groups that work best for them. In both these roles I have also been a trade union representative, supporting people when they are going through difficulties in work. I have also recently been voted as the Equality Officer for my branch.
I am also a voluntary director of Plymouth Pride CIC. When first setting up I helped write our policies and procedures, before focusing on the traders at the event. In the team, I dealt with all the trader applications, responding to their emails, collecting necessary documents, issuing invoices and taking payments, and mapping out stall positions. This role expanded into community engagement, initially focusing on including more LGBT+ sport groups, youth groups, and Trans communities. This year it was due to include families and accessibility, but unfortunately, the event had to be cancelled. I am currently reviewing with the rest of the team what we might be able to do in place of the larger event.
